POWER BOATING MADE EASY:

Program Description

Powerboating Made Easy teaches fundamental knowledge and skills that are essential to all powerboat operators. It is designed for skippers and crew who are new to boating as well as seasoned boaters who have had no formal training. Its overall goal is to prepare new boaters to skipper their own boat safely and enhance the skills, safety and confidence of those who have some boating experience. Powerboating Made Easy is the first boater education program to combine online learning with practical, underway training aboard a "floating classroom".

The essentials of boating safety are learned through an online, self-study program that covers fundamental knowledge including rules of the road, understanding Aids to Navigation, safe vessel operation, and the legal requirements of boating. This eLearning program is approved by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) and meets the educational requirements of most states. State-specific requirements may be found online at www.boaterexam.com .

Essential skills are best learned with practical experience and students get the opportunity to engage in hands-on exercises during specially designed underway learning sessions. Practical skills training includes: precision boat control in tight spaces, docking skills, basic chart familiarization and route planning, using Aids to Navigation, applying the rules of the road while underway, anchoring, handling waves and wakes safely and much more. Classes are conducted aboard either a single or twin inboard or an outboard/stern drive boat and participants may choose to learn on whichever propulsion type is most suitable for their needs.

This unique, experiential approach puts participants at the helm of a training vessel with a USCG licensed and certified professional instructor to transform boating knowledge into skills that will last a lifetime.

TYPES OF VESSELS WE INSTRUCT ON:
Twin Inboard Up to 80':

An Inboard motor is a marine propulsion system. As opposed to an Outboard motor where an engine is mounted outside of the hull of the craft, an Inboard motor is enclosed within the hull of the boat usually connected to a propulsion screw by a driveshaft. Twin Inboard Drives are two independent, side-by-side engines within a single boat and are very effective in close quarters. This effective twin drive setup uses two inboard engines, two propellers and two rudders.

Single Inboard

An Inboard motor is a marine propulsion system. As opposed to an Outboard motor where an engine is mounted outside of the hull of the craft, an Inboard motor is enclosed within the hull of the boat usually connected to a propulsion screw by a driveshaft. Single Inboard's are powered by one engine, diesel or gas, with one propeller and a rudder positioned amidship directly behind the prop.

Stern Drive / Outboard

The Stern Drive, also called an Inboard / Outboard (I / O) is a form of marine propulsion and is located inboard just forward of the transom or stern and delivers power via a shaft that goes through the transom to the drive unit located outside the hull and resembles the bottom half of an outboard. This unit contains the gearing for the system and carries the propeller. The boat is steered by pivoting this unit and no rudder is needed.
An Outboard motor consists of a self-contained unit that includes engine, gearbox and propeller designed to be affixed to the outside of the transom. As well as providing propulsion, outboards provide steering control as they are designed to pivot over their mountings to control the direction of thrust.
